Music with violent lyrics can increase thoughts and emotions related to aggression, which can lead directly to violence. According to Craig A. Anderson, Ph.D. at Iowa State University, “aggressive thoughts can influence the perception of ongoing social interactions, coloring them with an aggressive hue. » Violent music negatively affects children by exposing them to things like Satanism, drugs, suicide and sexual violence. Music depicting any type of violence against others provokes and maintains the cycle of violence among young people. Today's youth would greatly benefit from less violent music ringing in their ears. This was proven by researchers at Iowa and the Texas Department of Human Services in Austin. They organized a series of five experiments, involving more than 500 students, which examined the effects of different music. They took seven violent songs from seven artists and eight non-violent songs from seven artists. All students were given the same songs to listen to. As they listened, they were asked to do psychological tests. This helped the researchers measure any aggressive thoughts or feelings participants experienced during the experiment. Some of the tests included classifying words that could have both aggressive and non-aggressive meanings, such as rock and stick. The results of the experiment were astonishing. This showed that violent chants led participants to more violent lyrics. It also increased one of two things. The first being the relative speed with which people read aggressive and non-aggressive words and the second being the proportion of word fragments. For example, the fragment h_t, was filled with an aggressive word such as hit. Violent songs also increased feelings of unprovoked hostility...... middle of paper ...... today can teach young people that murder, suicide and other acts of violence are acceptable. This can teach them to look down on others and believe only in success, fame and money. As children grow, they will carry the knowledge they have learned with them. They will carry it throughout their daily lives and it could lead them to commit dangerous and violent acts against themselves or each other. If they continue to listen to this type of music, their future could be scary. Dr Anderson said: “One of the major conclusions of this and other research into violent entertainment media is that content matters. The message is important for all consumers, but especially for parents of children and adolescents. Canadian rock band Triumph said it best: “Music holds the secret, knowing that it can heal you. It's not just a game of notes; it's the sound inside your soul.”
