John Green makes it clear to readers that sacrificing for others and showing sympathy to others in times of need are the essential messages of the nature of kindness. Although there are different key aspects involved in the nature of kindness, according to John Green, putting the needs of others before your own and giving sympathy to others in times of need are the most important. Hazel, the protagonist, finds herself in multiple situations where someone is in need and she sacrifices herself or someone sacrifices her needs for hers. There are also situations where Hazel in this novel has to show sympathy to many people in her life. When one of Hazel's support group friends needs her sympathy, she sacrifices herself by being alone when she's not supposed to. With Hazel's cancer present in her lungs, she should never drive alone, and she does so because she knows her friend, Isaac, needs it more than she does.
