Essay / A problem in the justice system - 1338
Abolishing lethal injection would rid an inefficient system. Lethal injection is ineffective because drugs used in lethal doses are increasingly difficult to obtain. These drugs are more difficult to obtain because, in 2010, “Hospira Inc., the sole manufacturer of sodium thiopental, a sedative that is part of the normal three-drug mix, stopped production” (“The Moral Position of the 'Europe'). This makes lethal injection ineffective, because without drugs, states cannot carry out any executions. So, until new drugs are found, executions are suspended. Additionally, this adds to the downside of lethal injection as it becomes waste. Indeed, states give a lot of money and support this system, but no executions take place, which defeats the purpose of lethal injection and, for this reason, lethal injection must be abandoned. Second, states have been able to obtain new drugs to carry out executions, but there are now new concerns about their dangerousness. One drug that states have begun using to replace sodium thiopental is pentobarbital, which is a drug “intended to treat epilepsy and euthanize animals” (Lain). The problem with this drug is that "the Danish manufacturer of pentobarbital, Lund Beck, announced that the drug was dangerous for lethal injections and restricted its sales for executions" (Hennessy Fiske). The manufacture of pentobarbital is not the only source claiming that this drug is dangerous. Inmates on death row also say the drug is dangerous, which has delayed executions and made lethal injection ineffective. This is also a vulnerable point of lethal injection because it shows the lack of attention from States towards these criminals. State...... middle of paper ......ch Is Death Worth?"
