LeukemiaWhat is leukemia?Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. It starts in the bone marrow, the soft tissues inside the bones. It is in the bone marrow that white blood cells are created, which help fight bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in the body that cause infections. The disease develops when white blood cells are produced out of control. The cells produced do not function properly as they should, they grow faster than a normal cell and do not know when to stop growing. Over time, if not treated properly, white blood cells clog blood cells, creating a serious problem such as anemia, bleeding and infections. Leukemia cells can spread to lymph nodes and other organs in the body, causing swelling and pain. What are the different types of leukemia? - Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood that progresses rapidly without treatment.
