Essay / A Comparison of History's Great Scientists - 1061
Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived from 469 to 399 BC. Much of what he knew he learned from another famous ancient Greek philosopher, Plato. Concerning logic and human behavior in general, “Socrates' life was inspired by discussions and debates with the youth of Athens and the leading philosophers of his time” (Daintith, Vol. 9 93). He introduced methodical and orderly thinking. Socrates is said to have said: “It seemed to me a superlative thing to know the explanation of everything, why it appears, why it perishes, and why it exists” (Daintith, Vol. 9 93). This sums up what he sought to discover and understand throughout his life. Socrates is a true example of ancient Greek philosophers and scientists. Like so many others of his time, he sought to understand the universe, why it exists and how it came to be. The great philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC) was another among many amazing thinkers of ancient Greece, including Plato. and Socrates. “The Greek philosopher Aristotle had an exceptional intellect. His writings – from politics to zoology – covered every branch of human knowledge. Although his ideals have not always stood the test of time, Aristotle's approach had a profound influence on later Western and Islamic thought and science. (Allaby 6) He was also the tutor of Alexander the Great. Like most other scientists and philosophers of his time, Aristotle was primarily interested in logic and the origins of the universe. He was also very interested in politics and economics and how the world was managed and kept in order throughout the ages. “Aristotle considered humanity to be the most important being in the universe” (Frank 16). We have much to thank the many scientists and philosophers throughout the ages, including the survival and improvement of health and knowledge we possess in our society today.
