Essay / Argumentative Essay on Climate Change - 1848
Climate change is a long-term change in regional or global climate patterns. Since the mid-20th century until today, this has mainly been a significant increase in global average temperatures. Climate change is a major problem in the world today, and many people have very different opinions about its causes. The common argument on this topic is whether climate change is a natural phenomenon or whether the recent increase in temperatures is man-made. Climate change is a natural cycle of Earth's climate. Before humans began burning fossil fuels, there were still weather cycles on Earth that were as hot or hotter than today. In fact, the weather on Earth is currently keeping pace with previous weather patterns in history. Human EmissionsJeffrey Salmon is the executive director of the George C. Marshall Institute in Washington, DC. It is an organization that conducts scientific research on issues that affect public policy. Salmon disagrees that global warming poses a serious threat to human health or the environment (Salmon 23). He believes there is no solid scientific evidence to support the theory that the Earth is warming because of human-caused greenhouse gases. Salmon argues that environmentalists and politicians have seized on very rare scientific findings and fostered a sense of crisis in order to advance their own agendas. Much of the talk about how the world will only be saved if humans reduce fossil fuel emissions only happens because these people are spreading the word and instilling fear in people. The truth is that the Earth is not changing rapidly enough for any of this to be necessary (Salmon 25). Salmon also compared the threat of global warming to a weekly weather forecast. He says that just as a meteorologist is often wrong about the week's weather, predictions about Earth's future weather are a bit fuzzy. If the weather cannot always be predicted a few days in advance, then it is impossible to determine whether Earth's weather patterns over several years are true (Salmon
