In today's era where the Internet can provide quick access to any type of information and media, copyrighted content faces challenges serious threats of violation. Unauthorized distribution and copying of such copyrighted content results in digital piracy. Common examples are downloading and uploading movies, music, e-books, software, and other copyrighted content. Piracy deprives original creators, scientists and artists of the incentives they deserve. Digital piracy has caused the U.S. copyright industry to lose billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs. In order to protect the exclusive rights of copyright holders and encourage original ideas for scientific progress, digital piracy must be curbed by appropriate measures. So, this article will discuss the problems caused by digital piracy and suggest measures to reduce digital piracy. With the growing popularity of the Internet, global distribution of content can be done easily and cheaply, easily avoiding middlemen for distribution purposes. The downside of such easy access is that consumers can access content for free that they may not be authorized to view. With downloading pirated digital data just a click away, many Internet users resort to illegal sites or peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. The scale of this problem is such that 25% of traffic on the Internet today is the result of copyright infringement. Advances in digital technology have made it possible to produce countless replicas inexpensively and distribute them over the Internet without problem. Content produced without copy protection measures, availability of high-speed Internet access and cheap storage means available online; all contribute to the increasing incidence of piracy. ...... middle of paper ...... gal means. The Internet was meant to be open by nature, to provide information and services to everyone, but was never meant to be a gigantic hacking machine. It is not designed to facilitate access to copyrighted content and encourage the sharing of copyrighted content. There is an urgent need to remove internet services that encourage digital piracy. Internet companies, government and consumers must work together to maintain the integrity of the Internet and take active steps to eliminate digital piracy.
