  • Essay / A literary convention used by Junot Díaz - 1664

By analyzing a symbol as a literary convention used by the author, Junot Díaz attempts to identify the purpose of the device. In his novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007), the mechanism is used to develop an explicit character and point of view. The symbol is a sensory image that contains rich implications, narrow or broad. Sometimes the reader is put off by the author with an unknown meaning of the symbol and is therefore forced to create their own interpretation. This last principle is intentionally implemented by the author as a literary hook to attract the attention of his audience so that they continue reading. Additionally, the author can also use in combination with the hook the method of using pathos as a means of arousing the emotions of his readership. Therefore, the author effectively creates a momentum by which the reader will be controlled through a symbol. Using a symbol as a literary convention in a novel creates a hidden meaning. A literary convention, a symbol of faceless men, is used by Dominican-American writer Junot Díaz to give connotation and form to his novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Calculated, Díaz used this symbol repeatedly throughout his novel to lend more depth to his narrative and perhaps as a catalytic backdrop for political violence. The symbol of faceless men is found in his novel in the following scenes: Dejame, she screamed, and when she looked up, she saw that there was still a cop sitting in the car, and when he s turned towards her, she saw that there was no policeman. I don't have a face. All his strength fell from him (141). In the scene above, the faceless man represents the abuse of power by the cops and those who take away your device... middle of paper..... .not. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007).
