GMO: a solution to problemsWith an exponentially increasing world population, massive hunger in third world countries and a constantly changing environment due to climate change, conventional crops can no longer support the world's population. The solution to this conundrum lies in the introduction of genetically modified crops: a new advancement in the agricultural industry. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) resist aggressive new sources of weeds, pests and other diseases to thrive in harsh environments. They also have higher agricultural yields, essential for feeding a growing population. Additionally, some even claim that they contain more nutritional value and taste better than traditional crops. Despite all this, perhaps the most crucial advantage of GMOs is the fact that they can resist the effects of climate change. Increasingly frequent droughts, storms and heat events have hit farmers and significantly reduced crop yields. Global warming is inevitable and could lead to a decrease in food supplies when the world desperately needs an increase. In the intense debate over GMOs, the question is no longer whether or not we should use GMOs, but rather how to use them. There are many possible safety risks to GMO products and the safety precautions currently in place are not sufficient to regulate the many threats that GMOs could present. There could be a compromise on the many benefits that GMOs confer to the food and agricultural industries. A documentary raises a very scary question: If harmful insects die after eating genetically modified foods, what will happen to the humans who eat these foods? These fears are just the tip of the iceberg in a sea of uncertainty. Many professors in the... middle of the newspaper ...... enough to encourage the government to take new security measures. To prevent possible complications such as increased chronic diseases, cancer and allergies, further independent research should be carried out by the government. Furthermore, to reduce the influence of profitable companies on GMO safety rules, the government should diminish the power of certain pressure groups. To eliminate the major health complications that GMOs could pose, mandatory recalls and continuous monitoring should be put in place by the government. Rules have been proposed for every significant human invention. After the car was introduced to the United States, the rules of the road had to be obeyed by all drivers. As a result, these rules have made the roads safe and efficient for everyone. The rules regarding GMOs would do the same. They would ensure consumer safety and be able to feed a growing population.
