    Many accidents cost the lives of many people every year, the fault being due to an elderly driver. Many health reasons, decreased poor judgment and memory loss in older drivers can be prevented if caught early through assessments. Age can be the progressive result of decline in strength, coordination, reaction time, ability to concentrate and hearing. “Drivers aged 70 and over are among those at greatest risk of traffic violations and motor vehicle accidents per mile driven.” (The Older Driver 3) Due to visual impairment, loss of mobility, and loss of judgment, there should be mandatory annual license evaluations between ages seventy and eighty and license termination at the age of eighty for security reasons. , the senses begin to fade and bodily mobility also tends to decrease. Vision is one of the most important elements of driving; the driver must be able to stay focused on the road, the car in front of him, the cars around him and also on his speed. Many young drivers are distracted by the radio, by friends in the car, or sometimes even by an electronic device. On the other hand, an older person would have few distractions but still might not be able to function properly. Above the age of seventy, an increased rate of strokes and heart attacks is particularly dangerous when operating a motor vehicle. If a person suffers a stroke while driving, they do not have the time or ability to safely disable their vehicle. The car can have multiple effects when this happens, the biggest effect could be an immediate stop and the driver can have a rear-end collision. With the driver also off-road, this gives them the opportunity to sell their car or give it to a loved one who is just starting to drive. Annual driving evaluations are essential to reducing accidents on the road. Older drivers have many health problems that can prevent them from operating a motor vehicle responsibly, and doing so can cause many innocent and preventable deaths.
