    Access is analyzed to measure resource availability and equity is examined to uncover barriers that limit the participation of groups and individuals. Sociologist Peter Figueroa developed a framework designed to analyze how society affects access and equity related to sports participation. The framework includes five levels: the cultural, structural, institutional, interpersonal and individual level (Hede, et al, 2011, p. 299). In this situation, the cultural level is associated with the history, culture of Australia and our collective values, beliefs and attitudes towards dance. The individual level is relevant because it studies the reasons why individuals choose or refuse to participate in dance. Australian culture places significant pressure on men to display their masculinity and the value of companionship. This is why sports such as rugby, football and cricket are encouraged (Goldsmith, 2015). This cultural belief creates a barrier affecting men's access to dance, because it opposes social conformity. Similarly, dance in Australia is distorted and presented in a negative light, with an emphasis on sexualization (Toxward, 2015). Thus affecting the individual level as it goes against individual beliefs that sport should be a tool for personality development and strengthening which is why girls are encouraged to participate in sports such as netball.
