  • Essay / Texting in Society - 1072

As the popularity of cell phones increases, text messaging is also becoming more common within society. With the creation of new technologies such as smartphones, texting has become a popular communication tool that makes life more convenient. However, with text messaging, other forms of communication such as calls and face-to-face conversations have declined. When the time is right, the ability to communicate in all possible forms is vital. Without these skills to engage in conversation other than text messaging, it can be difficult to create new relationships in a professional or personal setting depending on the situation (Irvine). In addition to decreasing the amount of communication between others, texting has created other problems that have impacted many drivers. Another problem with texting is texting while driving. This problem has caused drivers to be less careful while driving and pay more attention to their phones, which could lead to injuries, accidents, serious health problems and death. In a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, 73% of American adults sent and received text messages in 2011. For young adults ages 18 to 24, 109.5 messages were sent on average , or approximately 3,285 text messages per month (Smith). However, others may or may not exceed this average due to personal preference. Overall, texting can have a positive and negative effect on society.
