Dirty water and public health threaten the United States. Rainwater/snowmelt accumulates toxins, chemicals, waste, and disease-carrying organisms as it accumulates in our resources. Our water resources are also affected by pollution from factories, fracking, and farms. Additional protections are in place to prevent future degradation (nrdc.org). Freshwater protection includes the Clean Water Act. This is an existing protection law that the United States enforces on all significant waterways, including streams and wetlands, that provide drinking water to 117 million Americans. Additionally, new pollution limits must be put in place for runoff and wastewater. There are also more protections to reduce bacterial and viral pollution that threatens health and life.
