Essay / ||The lives of the people who resided in the era of the Lost Generation made their existence seem meaningless, as if life had no purpose. Everyone seemed to be going through the motions, using routine and cyclical forms of life. If people are unhappy with their situation in life, they stay there anyway because they feel stuck. Although the title of the novel, The Sun Also Rises, expresses consistency and most of the characters remain unchanged, falling into a repetitive pattern, Jake Barnes is able to overcome this pattern of society's transience by learning to resolve his despair staff. At the beginning of the novel, Jake Barnes is a typical spokesperson for members of the Lost Generation. His experience during World War I damaged most of his beliefs in love and manhood, causing him to live aimlessly, content with being dissatisfied with life, thinking that one could never change it. The war had left Jake powerless, which also caused him to doubt his masculinity. Jake remembers the time the liaison colonel came to visit him in the hospital....
