  • Essay / All Men Are Created Equal: Except Women - 1347

The image that is usually associated with feminism is that of an angry, bra-burning lesbian running around denying the patriarchy. It could be that of a mid-century housewife who complains that her only career choices are between teacher and secretary, or even of a woman with a scarf and a banner marching in front of the White House; preach about your right to vote. However, this is not necessarily the case. Since the rise of the Internet in the late 20th century, feminism has undergone a revival, leading to growing popularity and distribution on forums around the world. Women are joining this “third wave” movement to end the societal injustices that still affect women today (quoted in Haslanger et al.). Feminism today represents much more than it did in its infantile stage, having evolved to include pertinent issues that affect every woman in today's subordinate world. Issues such as rape culture, slut shaming, abortion and the wage gap were all adapted into the feminist agenda in the hope that as a united force, women could bring about change in a misogynistic society. The days of bra burning are over and feminism is thriving, shining a light on issues that need to be addressed. One of the most horrible things that has arisen from the subjugation of women is rape culture. Rape culture is the downplaying of the crime of rape to appease the offender, the accusation that the victim made a choice that led to their rape, or even jokes suggesting rape. According to Jessica Valenti, "In rape tragedies, the shame is ours", in today's world, many people give in to rape culture by participating in these acts which in one way or another another, change our mentality and make us believe that “it is more shameful to be raped than to be raped”. be a rapist.” Once...... middle of paper...... ncine D. and Lawrence M.
