Essay / A comparison of British and American political parties - 959
A comparison of British and American political parties A party system as described by G. Sartori is “the system of interactions resulting from competition between parties”. A one-party system cannot produce a political system, as we would identify it in Britain. One party cannot produce any system other than autocratic/dictatorial rule: as the title suggests, this is a state in which only two parties can exist, but they did. no political importance. The multi-party system: as the title suggests, this is a system in which more than two parties have some impact on the political life of a state. The dominant party system: it is different from a single party system. within the political structure of a state, becoming so dominant that victory in elections is considered a formality. A political party is made up of organized groups of voters and politicians with similar ideas about how the government should be run and who should represent them. A two-party system in which two parties dominate in the United States: the Republican and Democratic parties. Other parties may exist but they have no political importance. America has the most obvious two-party political system, with Republicans and Democrats dominating the political scene. For the system to work, one party must gain a sufficient majority after an election and must be able to govern without the support of the other party. A rotation of power is expected in this system...... middle of paper ...... allowed to vote freely. American parties are weak organizations and “party discipline” in the American Congress is loose. In the United States Congress, a unity (or party line) vote is defined as a majority of one party voting against the majority of others. The weak definition allows only a relatively small majority of votes in the Senate and House of Representatives to be considered partisan votes. In the United States, formal party "membership" is unknown; just register as Democrats or Republicans. The Democratic and Republican parties have become more ideologically homogeneous. Therefore, Republicans are more conservative than Democrats, but Southern Republicans are more conservative than Northeastern Republicans and even though Southern Democrats tend to be less liberal than Democrats in other parts of the country..
