Academic freedom is something most people don't think about until it becomes clear that it is their stories that are being ignored. Topics such as the Spanish-American War, Black Wall Street, George Stinney, etc. are all pieces of American history that we don't hear about at all, or only hear half the story about. One reason why academic freedom is so difficult to preserve: How many minorities are enrolled in an institution of higher education? The fewer of us there are, the less our problems matter.
