Essay / With freedom and justice for all? - 1540
There is an old saying “no matter how flat a pancake is, it always has two sides”. After reading the essay written by Michael Kinsley entitled "The Religious Superiority Complex", I decided to further investigate General Boykin's comments and actions, to examine why our highly decorated combat veteran was being attacked . My skepticism of the article caused me to look further into its conduct. I am aware enough to know that the mainstream media can be one-sided and committed to gathering verifiable evidence before making or passing judgment. Could it be that the general's comments were taken out of context? Did the general abuse his role of authority? And finally, did the general ignore the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, “separation of church and state,” to preach his ideological beliefs or was he exercising his constitutional rights? There is no doubt that Lieutenant General William Boykin spoke, on various occasions and while wearing his decorated military uniform, during religious services. Kinsley quoted the general as saying, "The enemy is a guy called Satan." It is, however, indisputable that the general made this comment; his speech was dissected in the media and in Kinsley's article. The general was quoted as saying: “As Americans, as Christians, we have to understand that this is not the enemy that America is up against. In fact, the enemy we face is called the principality of darkness, it's called Satan. We are in fact in a spiritual battle, ladies and gentlemen, more than a physical battle” (Strand, 2003). Did I read it correctly? The United States of America, the strong, the moral, the righteous, and where opportunities abound for anyone willing to work for the American dream... a... middle of paper ... it's psychological. terrorism. This does not mean that the security of our country is not necessary. This is simply to highlight how the government uses terrorism to try to control what is not theirs. With liberty and justice for all... as long as you are a Christian. References Ali, brother. The Undisputed TruthUncle Sam Fuckingwww.brotherali.comConnett, Carl (January 2002).
