  • Essay / Summary and Review of The Solution to Global Poverty by Peter Singer

When we talk about global poverty, it always seems to depress people, and yet they go to a restaurant once a week and buy things they don't want. don't even need it. Do people really care about global poverty if they are willing to spend needlessly on things they don't need? Peter Singer's The Solution to Global Poverty explains in detail how we should act versus how we normally act. We tend to judge people for refusing to help the poor, but we do the exact same thing when we spend money on unnecessary things. Rich people better not get by and can spend money on whatever they want. Say no to plagiarism. They choose money over helping people. They are not the only ones to do this: the author points out that Americans spend "nearly a third of their income on things that are not necessary." Which breaks some people's hearts because people are willing to spend so much money on one thing, but they don't help the poor. Anything you buy that you don't need is useless and you could help poor people. If you buy things unnecessarily, you have no right to judge what others do with their money. We are all guilty of buying unnecessary things instead of helping the poor. Many people want to help end world hunger. Singer believes he has a solution to end world hunger. The ethical solution he proposed is that he believes that if we give up everyday luxuries, we will find the cure to world hunger. Luxury goods encompass everything from restaurant meals to clothing that might be considered out of season. “The money you spend dining out could help save the lives of children abroad.” The singers' point of view could be credible and there is some well-considered evidence for how it could work. However, saying this might come across as aggressive and rude, telling you not to buy that “new car, take a cruise, or redecorate your house.” He would have lost many people's attention by telling them how they should act from the start. Now while I agree with the method of not eating out as much that he mentioned, sometimes you have to do things for yourself too, this is where I feel like Singer is too passive with what he has to say. The Solution to Global Poverty is filled with emotions that Singer wants you to feel. Reading his essay made me feel convicted about the amount of money I spend that I really shouldn't spend. As a teenager, I want to follow the latest trends and not wear last year's fashion. Singer states that "buying new clothes isn't essential" (Singer 1) and frankly, it's just a waste of money. After reading this I sat there and realized how much I say I want when there are people living in poverty all over the world. . Bob didn't save a child's life from a train, but if that bothers us, he tells us we should give to things "like UNICEF or Oxfam America." He tells us we can't judge Bob if we don't donate to these places. Moreover,.
