  • Essay / Critical Analysis of Frederic Remington - 918

For my critical analysis article, I went to the Evansville Museum of Arts located in Evansville, Indiana to choose a topic for my article. I chose to review the sculpture created by American artist Frederic Remington. This sculpture was cast by the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company in New York in 1895 (Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science). There was an object label next to the sculpture that gave general information about Remington and his work. He said that Frederick was inspired by horses and depicted them accurately in mediums such as drawings, woodcuts, paintings and sculptures. His incredible eye for detail heightens the drama and intensifies the power of the animal in motion. Frederic Remington was born in Canton, New York, October 4, 1861 (Hatfield, Frederic). His childhood was spent during the Civil War, where he participated in many outdoor recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, boating, and more. He also loved drawing and doodling, mostly of soldiers in uniform. His father was a journalist and told him many stories about the West, sparking his love for it. He went to college for a bit, at the Yale School of Fine Arts, but dropped out after his father became ill and died. He then tried his hand at the business world, but it only lasted a few months. In the summer of 1879, he met Eva Adele Caten and became passionate about her. In the fall of 1884, the two married. They started life out West, but soon decided to settle in Brooklyn, New York. His wife left to stay with her father and Remington went west to do some soul searching. There he delved into the rough and rugged cowboy lifestyle (Evansville Museum ...... middle of paper ......ns and how he positioned them. I think that it was a perfect gift to give to Theodore Roosevelt, because of his involvement in the Rough Riders and his love for the outdoors and the Wild West, it is a symbol of the tenacity and strength of cowboys, and he represents that of the cowboy overcoming the rebel bronco and being able to ride it. I have seen many broncos in local rodeos and the way they move their bodies is beautiful. They are graceful but powerful with every stride and jump. that they do. Remington does a wonderful job creating a statue that expresses much of the movement he first observed in the broncos. It takes a lot of talent to accurately depict an object you. have witnessed, not just a still object but a moving one, and for it to convey the same movement that you saw, and Remington had this talent.
