Essay / The Importance of Listening to Music - 723
Imagine if only one size of pants was sold in stores and the rules and regulations did not allow any other size to be sold. This may sound crazy, but it's a lot like what's happening in our colleges today. Imagine that Tommy is sitting in class and trying to do his schoolwork, but he can't concentrate because the teacher keeps coughing or Susie keeps dropping her pencil. Tommy's problem could be solved if he could just plug in his headphones and listen to music. But according to the professor, music is a distraction for some people, which means that no one can listen to music, no matter how useful it may be to Tommy. In this situation, the teacher treats every student the same, when in reality, every student learns differently and has different ways to help them focus and succeed. Establishing a “No music” rule based on the fact that it might be distracting is a bit like stores only selling one pair of pants. Music could be the solution for the overall improvement of students. If the volume is kept at a decent volume and students are responsible for their musical choices, listening to music in class is a huge benefit and will help many students do better in school. Did you know that music helps the brain learn better? Specific musical structures stimulate specialized brain circuits allowing students to more easily convert complex ideas. Did you know that music helped Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence? When he couldn't find the right words for a certain part, he played the violin. Music helped him put the words in his head onto paper. The same effect works with students. In the article "Music and Learning", Dr. Jeanette Vos says: "Music acts directly on the body, particularly on metabolism and heart rate... middle of paper ...... extraction. But if students end up losing focus, they might try listening to music in different ways. Students should listen to quieter music to help them concentrate, not loud Waka Flocka. If certain restrictions are imposed and students are responsible for the type of music they listen to, distraction should not be a problem. The music should be soft and calm, this way schoolwork is the main focus. Although listening to music can lead to some disruptive qualities, listening to music in class is a productive tool. Music helps improve students' work habits and relaxes them while working. Overall, music helps students focus on the task at hand and provides a positive element in a less than pleasant environment. I believe every student should have the chance to learn more effectively and listening to music can achieve that..
