Essay / Karl Marx's theory of the capitalist economic system
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist and evolutionary socialist born in Germany on May 5, 1818. His theories mainly concerned the capitalist economic system. Marx attended the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin. He is widely recognized for his theory of the class system which includes the concepts of base and super-structure. Marx's theory of the class system is well presented in the documentary film Class Dismissed: How Television Frames the Working Class. The film Class Dismissed is a documentary video focusing on different marginalized groups in the media. This film shows what the working class is like in their daily lives and explores their cultural attitudes in the eyes of society. This generates a negative or stereotypical image of the target towards African Americans, gay groups and women. The class system is well organized in terms of Marx's theory which is reflected in the media characters, as independent individuals, but at the same time the media has added its own perspective on the class having difficulty in s integrate into society and one's own personality. According to Karl Marx’s class system theory, there are three stages of class (Brym, 2014). The first class is made up of the capitalists/bourgeoisie who control the means of production; everything you need to produce. This class tends to have the most power and control over the working class; they usually invest money in a company for its machinery, land and raw materials. The second class is the Little Bourgeoisie which maintains the system by producing ideology (2014). There, people depend on selling the materials produced by their labor to survive, their main sales are to the upper class of Bou...... middle of paper ......mes working class supports and validates Karl Marx's theory of the class system and the ideology of base and superstructure. His theory is commonly broadcast on television through typical 90s American sitcom shows wanting to live the dream. According to the film, the media has great power towards the viewers, capable of exploiting any common man by wanting to lead a rich life and viewing actors as role models. Therefore, Karl Marx's theory that the ruling class dominates the middle class only benefits the ruling class is effectively applied in the media and is a real fact.
