  • Essay / Reading Reflection on the book The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer

A man, a clone and a bond stronger than blood will be tested through a perilous game of mind and will. The book I read was The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, written in 2002. It's a book I've seen before, but haven't read. The biggest draw for this book was the science fiction genre, which is something that interests me a lot. This book was recommended to me by my friend who said it was an excellent, deep book. The House of the Scorpion is the only book I've read by Nancy Farmer. Say no to plagiarism. Matt's childhood was decent, aside from the hatred he receives from the Alacran family. He lives with his Celia, his mother figure, who works as a cook for the Alacrán family. But when Matt is taken to the big house on the Alacran estate in the land of opium, Matt's life takes a dark turn. He faces a series of isolation, prejudice, isolation, violence, illness and death threats - all before the age of fourteen! Matt happily finds a family during the time he resides at the Alacran estate: his mother figure Celia, his bodyguard Tam Lin and his lover María. With the help of these friends, Matt eventually travels to Aztlán, formerly known as Mexico. Where he is still mistreated, he must work vigorously and fend for himself. Matt eventually runs away to live with María and her mother Esperanza, who is involved in the anti-opium protests and the politics surrounding them. Eventually, at the end of the novel, Matt returns to opium and takes the throne of his country after the death of El Patrón. The novel ends with Matt preparing to erase the damage caused by El Patrón during his tyrannical reign. Tam-Lin, Matt's bodyguard talks about El Patron, the man Matt considers an idol and someone who seems very gentle and kind. Tam-Lin then says 'I'll tell you this, El Patrón has his good side and his bad side.' Her Majesty is indeed very dark when she wants to be. When he was young, he made a choice, like a tree does when it decides to grow in one direction or the other. It has grown tall and green until it casts a shadow over the entire forest, but most of its branches are twisted. This short saying has a very strong meaning because Matt considers El Patron to be a powerful man and extremely kind to him. Matt trusts El Patron very much and considers him almost infallible. This is not true however and El Patron has done a number of terrible things and Tam-Lin has been by his side through a number of them and has seen the old man become more and more evil. In its entirety, this short saying is a warning for Matt to be wary of El Patron. Another important scene takes place on El Patron's birthday and since Matt is his clone, he also celebrates it as Matt's, but the party eventually ends and El Patron leaves. The day after a birthday party was always a disappointment. The power Matt enjoyed when the El Patrón clone disappeared. The servants began to ignore him again. The Alacráns treated him like something Furball spat on the carpet." This is an important thing for Matt because he realizes that he only has authority and power as long as El Patron is there when he leaves, Matt is no better than Maria's pet dog Another passage used takes place during the party. party because of his jealousy As he receives his gift, he asks..
