  • Essay / Advantages of Rossian Pluralism - 1857

Monist theories have failed to be broad enough to provide an adequate response to any moral scenario proposed to them. Additionally, among major pluralist theories, the inclusion of weighting rules in Rossian pluralism makes it a better candidate for a moral theory than virtue ethics, which is far too relativistic to be viable. Finally, even if the weighting rules of Rossian pluralism cannot give an adequate response to all moral conflicts, we must accept that this is simply the very nature of morality. It seems unlikely that we will ever find the answer to all the conflicts between moral duties, just as it is unlikely that we will know whether Michelangelo's paintings are objectively better than Picasso's paintings, or whether we should or no avoid ten fires. Picasso paintings instead of three Michelangelo paintings on fire. Because morality is subjective, we will never find answers to questions that require drawing meaningless lines where one thing becomes more important than another. Therefore, despite this universal question, Rossian pluralism still seems to be the most sensible moral solution.
