  • Essay / Iago: The Living Janus - 1314

There are many people considered sociopaths in the world, many of whom occupy high ranks in our society; among these many people can be found presidents and CEOs of companies, all willing to do whatever it takes to step on all kinds of people and rise to the top of the social classes. If the definition of a sociopath is a person suffering from emotional and behavioral disorders, a clear perception of reality, except the person's social and moral obligations and often the search for immediate gratification in criminal acts or sexual perversion, then Iago fits the description perfectly. Iago, of all men, wields the power of manipulation like no other man in Othello; he completely lacks empathy, is aggressive and is a master deceiver. To begin with, Iago in the play has a complete lack of empathy towards his peers and his surroundings in general; Although Iago seems to care about his friends, most sociopaths are liked due to their charm and great charisma, but they do not care about others. The problem with Iago's lack of empathy is that he is the reason there is conflict throughout the play. The lives of Othello and Desdemona as well as Cassio and Roderigo would go smoothly without Iago. From the beginning of the play, Iago explains his hatred towards Othello for making Cassio his lieutenant and he would do everything possible to take his rightful position, just like the average sociopath of our time would do. Iago shows no empathy in the actions he commits towards everyone in the room; he achieves such deeds by following in the footsteps of his favorite god, Janus. Janus is the two-faced god whom Iago praises; Iago makes this connection by appearing to be someone he is not. Iago in the play is known as Hones...... middle of paper ......the answer was very present. This continues right after he fails to kill Cassio. Iago proceeds to murder Roderigo; he doesn't need any proof to float and shrugs it off as if he knows nothing about him. Even though Roderigo thought Iago was his friend and later realized that Iago was playing his role, Iago continued to persuade him and manipulate his mind into believing that he was there to help him, but the true nature of Iago is very bad; because not only did he use Roderigo and play with his emotions to create a human wallet, but he also got rid of him very quickly as soon as he became a liability and useless. True sociopaths use people to their advantage and walk all over them when they are of no use to them; Iago had done this not only to Roderigo but to anyone who was close to being a threat like his own wife, solid proof of the real person beneath the layer of skin that Iago is..
