  • Essay / Othello's Flaws - 790

The modern world generally prefers characters who have flaws and more human qualities. As Nicholas Cage said: “I like imperfect characters because somewhere in them I see more truth.” There is a lot of truth to this statement, as flaws illustrate who the character really is and what their true intentions are. Therefore, characters with imperfections are more likely to attract more audiences. Many stories, like famous playwright William Shakespeare's Othello, have characters who may appear impeccable on the outside, but when imperfections are depicted, the truth is revealed. The character of Othello, from the tragedy Othello, is presented at the beginning as blameless in many respects. However, as the story progresses, many unattractive qualities are revealed through Othello's actions. One of his faults is that he is overconfident. Othello believes Iago's lies and is therefore unable to trust him from that point on. For example, when he believes Iago when Iago tells him that Desdemona gave Cassio her handkerchief, although this is completely untrue. Later, he does not believe Desdemona when she continually tells him that she is not cheating on him, because his trust has been destroyed. Another equally important fault is jealousy. Othello is jealous of the suspicious relationship between his lieutenant Cassio and his wife Desdemona. This is ironic because there really is no such relationship between the two. Othello has many flaws that allow him to appear more human and connect to society. These many flaws in Othello allow us to see more authenticity in him and, as a result, he appeals more to the audience. Authenticity is imperative for the audience to connect with the character of Othello and truly appreciate the Shakespearean tragedy. Othello is...... middle of paper ...... the character Iago. Vengeance is also a fault that most people wish to inflict on others and which they must face at one point or another in their lives. It is also a system that many people can connect to because they are either seeking revenge or have been avenged. Due to these flaws, there is a strong connection between today's society and the well-known character of Iago. These human qualities in Iago give him an appeal to modern society. Othello's characters, Othello and Iago, have many flaws that make them even more realistic. Shakespeare incorporated flaws into his characters, allowing more truth to be seen in them and, therefore, generating wider public appeal. The modern world is still able to connect with Shakespearean literature; (omit) we can deduce that characters with flaws have more influence on society than those without them.
