  • Essay / Theoretical Homework Assignment - 1088

After studying the different counseling theories over the past sixteen weeks, I have discovered that each theory is valid and that there are ideas and techniques that I would use to each of them. However, there are some theories that I think I will use more than others in my daily counseling sessions. First, I would like to touch on psychoanalytic theory. I agree with Freud that the power of the unconscious influences the way we think, feel and behave and that dreams are powerful tools to help people recognize their internal conflicts, their central struggles, their desires, their hopes and their visions for the future. It also recognizes the power of the past and traumatic early childhood experiences to prevent people from living happy, healthy, well-adjusted lives. However, I agree more with Erikson's psychosocial perspective than Freud's psychosexual stages in that people continue to develop socially throughout their lives and there are specific events to resolve at every stage of life. I will also use Adler's lifestyle assessment to reveal their family history. and early childhood experiences that may have influenced their (clients') lives. I will also use Adlerian theory to guide the way I counsel my clients and their attitudes toward themselves, difficulties, others, or life. Adler believes that emotions and behaviors are largely influenced by beliefs and thought processes. I want my clients to understand that they are entirely responsible for what they do with themselves. Unlike Freud, Adler emphasizes choice and responsibility, the meaning of life and the efforts...... middle of paper ...... they need or want. Reality theory understands the importance of a positive and satisfying therapist-client relationship. The therapist should be caring, slightly confrontational, without criticizing, blaming or complaining. Glasser also believes that we choose everything we do, including how we feel. Others cannot make us unhappy; we choose to be that way. So I would help the client decide which of their needs have not been satisfactorily met. Finally, if none of the above theories work, then I would give him a variety of behavioral and cognitive coping techniques to try, such as acquiring and repeating a new set. personal statements, relaxation training and time management instructions.
