  • Essay / English Semester Review - 661

English 101-60 taught me many things and helped me grow and develop my skills as a writer. It taught me to think more creatively and use concrete, clear details. At the beginning of the semester, our first writing assignment was a narrative journal entry that focused on writing about an uninteresting moment in your life and making it interesting. This was a difficult assignment because it was a broad subject that allowed the writers to take it in any direction. I remember thinking that I had no idea what I was going to write. Once I was able to refine the ideas, I began writing about the traumatic experience I had six years ago. That’s when I had surgery to remove my gallbladder. My main goal for this journal article was to specifically expand on the waiting room process. I found myself putting a lot of effort into this mission. After writing and editing this article myself, I asked a friend of mine and one of my roommates for clarification. When I had to go back and revise it for my portfolio, I made several changes that I could not have thought of at the beginning of the semester. I added more details where I was missing in the document. I also made sure not to leave any gaps in the narration. By writing the review in an insightful way that the audience could imagine themselves going through, I was able to allow readers to feel sympathetic pain toward my experience. I went back and made sure I didn't have any spelling mistakes. I also asked my friend to proofread the journal so he could catch any errors I had missed. I clarified my conclusion and linked it to the introduction. Overall, I think the story ended up even better than... middle of paper... to some extent), and certainly broadened my view of others' opinions and certainly improved. I ran into some issues that forced me to re-evaluate what the author was actually talking about and go from there. I don't think I have improved my time management or editing skills enough, as I still struggle to complete all assignments on time and complete them without any errors. I would definitely like to improve my ability to accept constructive criticism and use it properly to improve my essays and articles. I think I also need to work on taking my time on a mission and not waiting so long to start it. I also hope to hone my research and writing skills in the near future. This course kind of helped me transition from high school to college, and it will make things a lot easier next semester..
