  • Essay / Character Analysis of the Wife of Bath - 645

In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Chaucer begins by describing twenty-nine people who go on a pilgrimage. Every person has a different personality that we can recognize from the way people behave today. He created The Wife of Bath to stand out more from the other characters involved in these stories. In Chaucer's "General Prologue", the Wife of Bath was described as a woman intentionally portrayed in an obvious manner to provoke a shocking response. The wife has a lot of experience in things; she is a worldly person and has experience of the ways of the world in the sense of love and sex. Her clothing, physical features, and references to her past are intentionally discussed by Chaucer, leading the reader to wonder how such a flamboyant and extravagant character she is. She shows off her clothes with obvious pride, her face is shrouded in thick cloth, her stockings are a beautiful scarlet color and the leather of her shoes is soft and cool. Her clothes symbolize to the reader that she is neither fearful nor shy, and also show her skills as a weaver. In "The Wife of Bath's Prologue," the Wife of Bath discusses marriage, virginity, and, most importantly, the issue of domination. In the "Prologue to the Wife of Bath" he opens with a quote: "I have power, all my life, over his own body, and not over him." ยป (Norton 164-165) This quote proves how much domination and power she desired. And taken by default. She is a strong-willed and dominant woman who gets what she wants when she wants it. She cannot accept the fall, no matter how it is presented to her. She feels that this is how things should be and that men should subjugate her. She should not be controlled or told what to do by others, especially by a man. She displays...... middle of paper ...... and tends to be dead trying to make him feel guilty for what he did. Her way of making him feel guilty allows him to regain ultimate power. The Wife of Bath is not a feminist who fights for the rights of all women. She claims to know what pleases men because she has experience in love and sex. She believes in giving men what they want, which is sexual pleasure from her. This proves that she is not fighting for women's freedom. This is definitely an anti-feminist view. She uses sex to manipulate men, just like men. Giving in to man's desire goes against feminist beliefs, she had the choice not to give in to man's desire, but she lets men achieve sexual pleasure and power according to her own desire. At first I would think that she is trying to win freedom and liberation for women, but in reality that is not the case. She is an extremely selfish and bossy woman..
