Essay / Personal Statement: A Career as a Civil Construction Engineer...
The turning point in my career came during a conversation with my 10-year-old niece about my profession as a civil engineer under construction. I was passionate about talking about my career and my role in building skyscrapers, large office buildings and residential towers. His innocent comment that engineers are replacing green nature with concrete buildings shocked me and left me questioning my role as an engineer in developing eco-friendly construction and preserving our natural environment. My decision to pursue a Ph.D. in “Infrastructure and Environmental Systems” is my quest for solutions to the growing environmental impact resulting from the construction field without neglecting the economic challenges. Such a diploma will allow me to contribute to my country by introducing the concept of sustainable development; development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. While enrolling at the Lebanese university, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a full range of engineering courses that enhanced my capabilities in systems design with realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, manufacturability and durability. Applying theory to real-world projects at the end of each course strengthened my skills in analysis, data interpretation, and understanding the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context. These projects have been enjoyable and informative, giving me a new and different perspective on the world we live in. I believe that the Lebanese University played a fundamental role in preparing me to overcome any obstacles that might present themselves to my ambitions. I managed to get to the middle of paper......tunities it has to offer. I am sure that the stimulating academic environment and interaction with distinguished professors at your university will prove extremely fruitful and facilitate my development as an individual researcher in my field. I am confident that I would be able to make a positive contribution to the ongoing research work at your university. I also believe that I have the motivation, intellectual ability, and preparation to do justice to a demanding Ph.D. program. In short, I believe that this graduate program is an essential step in realizing my professional ambition of becoming a competent researcher. It would help me combine a teaching career with business and government consulting. I can help them balance economic and environmental concerns. So I look forward to joining your department as a graduate student.
