  • Essay / Les Colombes - 817

Les ColombesEach book can be compared to another book or to a real person or thing. Herman Melville's Billy Budd is not an exclusion. This novel can be compared to many things, but Billy Budd can only be compared to few people in the world. One of the most important and common comparisons is to Jesus Christ, because Billy was pure, he did not regret dying and was not angry with anyone for being hanged. He is a Christ-like figure for how his life ended, how he felt when he was hanged, and what he said just before he died. Billy Budd was as pure as anyone can be. He had no hatred towards any person or thing. Even Billy's last name, Budd, symbolizes a bud in nature. Everyone on the ship became good friends with Billy because he was just a loving person; he was a kind human being, just like Jesus Christ. Billy had a mysterious past. He was born of a virgin, just like Christ. Billy was found in England in a basket lined with silk, the silk indicating that he is pure. Billy liked to treat everyone with respect, no matter what they had done in the past or what they would do in the future. Jesus once said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” » (Matthew 7) Everyone on the ship hated Claggart, because he was a mean person. He wanted to whip someone 100 times so they would learn their lesson, but Billy Budd didn't hate Claggart, because he knew he was alone and no one understood him. Christ loved to help people, no matter how they were or how they treated him, because he knew there was goodness in them. On the ship, Billy was known as a peacemaker, and Jesus Christ was the prince of peace. The way Billy Budd and Jesus died is very symbolic...... middle of paper ...... work miracles then why didn't he run away? Jesus did not run away and let the crucifixion take place the next day. Some of the other sailors noticed that Billy Budd wasn't struggling, because usually they would back away or struggle to get away, but Billy Budd and Jesus just accepted it without any struggle. There aren't many people in the world who can do it. be compared to Christ, but Billy Budd can be considered Christ in many ways. Billy's feeling before his hanging can be compared to that of Jesus, because they were both at peace with themselves and not trying to avoid execution. Billy's hanging and Christ's crucifixion were similar, as Jesus was between two crosses and Billy was between two bridges. Their last words were exactly the same but worded differently. (The Dove symbolizes the purity of Billy Budd and Jesus Christ.)
