  • Essay / Satire of normal male friendship in The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Inigo and Fezzik, the two main characters of the novel entitled The Princess Bride, by William Goldman. They come from the same background, that of the loss of their parents. Fezzik's parents disappeared after being used and Inigo's parents were killed. My claim about them is that Goldman satirizes and shows what trauma can affect normal male friendship. This could be due to trauma or satire, but in Chapter 5 there was this character called Vizzini and Inigo and Fezzik both worked for him. After his death, Inigo felt useless, so he started drinking again and Fezzik was lost too. What really struck me was that they both felt incapable of doing anything without a leader. Later in the story, we soon find out that they have Miracle Max resurrect Westly, who becomes their new leader. They also desperately need a leader, because "the reason people think you're so stupid," the Sicilian said, "is because you're so stupid." Even after Vizzini publicly told Fezzik, they were still working for them as a leader. This really shows how traumatized and satirized Fezzik and Inigo are because even after such a rude and harsh comment, Fezzik and Inigo don't leave him, probably because they can't seem to do anything if they do. Another quote is the scene where Inigo and Fezzik take Westly's corpse to Miracle Max to try to reanimate him. “Come, come, bring the body.. …. Well, I hope that's enough to buy a miracle. This quote is basically the scene where Inigo tells Fezzik to bring the body and the second part of the quote basically shows that they will do anything to get a leader like Westly no matter the cost. The second reason I think Goldman is deliberately satirizing The Effects of Trauma on a Normal Male Relationship is because they both seem to be searching for something in the story. Inigo set out on a lifelong journey to try to avenge his father by searching for the person who killed his father. A quote that has been repeated over and over is: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. It was basically his motivational quote that really continued to achieve his ultimate goal of being able to kill Count Rugen and get revenge. This also shows that Inigo is determined to get revenge since in the overall story he kept repeating the statement to himself. Although Fezzik sought to find his parents, Fezzik not only wants that, but he seems to be desperately trying to prove others wrong in thinking that he is not stupid. In the scene where Fezzik tries to sing a poem and rhyme it, it seems like it proves Vizzini wrong about how stupid he is. Inigo in this scene is strangely impressed by her rhyming abilities and even encourages her by suggesting that she become a poet. This is one of the reasons why I think the trauma caused them to become more focused on one goal and look for another goal in life to help them relieve the pain caused by the trauma.
