Gender Equality in SportLiterature ReviewGender equality is defined as the act of treating men and women equally at all levels. When this gender equality is brought into discussion with our constantly evolving sports culture, it raises many concerns (Lyras 2009). Gender equality between male and female athletes has always been a hot-button issue, and even today it still needs to be said that there is not complete equality at any level of athletics. These inequalities come in the form of financial disparities, media coverage or lack thereof, and other benefits typically afforded to male athletes that are not afforded to women (Lyras). Title IX is a part included in the Education Amendments of 1972 that were signed into law. signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon. This Title IX law aims to end sex discrimination and states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation, be denied the benefits, or be subjected to discrimination as part of an educational program or educational program. activity receiving federal financial assistance…” This law had a major impact on the number of sporting opportunities now available to both women and men (Huckle 1978). Many other countries are striving for gender equality in sports. The South African cabinet, hoping to enforce gender parity in the private and public sectors, also recently passed the Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality (WEGE) Bill.
