Essay / Negative Leadership and Youth Sports - 1020
There are leaders in every situation and in every facet of life, leaders are all around us, both in business and in community. Leaders can be supervisors, managers, pastors, teachers, or anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they are trying to lead a group of people to achieve a specific goal. As Don Clark said “Good leaders are not born” (Clark 2010), leaders are developed through experience, training, education, and by observing and learning from other leaders. Our children learn to be leaders every day. They learn at school from their teachers and after school from their friends and parents. One of the most influential leaders for children in every community is a youth sports coach. In 2006, it was estimated that forty-one million children participated in youth sports (Hilgers, 2006). As President of Cherry Creek Youth Sports over the past five years, I have seen many leaders or coaches who have a positive influence on kids. Unfortunately, this is not the majority. When a child wants to play a sport, he or she should play for fun, to bond with friends, and to improve (Silverman, 2010).
