  • Essay / Washington's Second Term: The Election of 1792

In 1789, George Washington was unanimously elected by all 69 members of Congress to become the very first President of the United States of America. This unanimous vote was the result of the Washington context. He was widely known throughout the Thirteen States for being the leader of the Great Continental Army, which defeated the British in several key battles that secured the freedom and independence of the United States. Washington was also one of the people who helped create the Constitution, and he was well known, loved, and greatly respected by all citizens and leaders of the United States. His first mandate was a great success, but further action remains to be taken in the future. Thus, the re-election of George Washington in 1792 revealed the need for the country to have a strong unifying character at this point in its history. In this short journey through history, three major events and actions during his first term that kept Washington in the presidency for a second term will be reviewed. In 1789, just after Washington became president and America completed its Revolution, France had entered their own revolution: the French Revolution. The French had helped the United States in the American Revolution, and now that they were in the middle of theirs, France wanted the United States to help them too. This act by France stemmed from the Treaty of Alliance between America and France in 1777. Washington, with American citizens behind him, was happy to help France, but there was a problem: he did not know with who to communicate. all the leaders of France were constantly overthrown and even beheaded. But that wasn't the biggest problem facing Washington at the time. At the same time, it was... middle of paper... love” (Remini, 53 years old). The people elected him to his second term because of all the power he brought to America and because, of course, they valued his position before his presidency. To the people, he was a strong and powerful leader who they all followed and who respected Washington only for being the military hero who won the nation's freedom (Remini, PG). So when the second election came up with the question of who would help America escape all the problems that arose in 1792 and move the nation forward even further, the answer was obvious; George Washington for president.
