  • Essay / Body image; is it really serious? - 723

Does the “perfect body” exist? Do you think the nation has gone body image crazy? Is having the “ideal body” really necessary? Fifty-eight percent of college-age girls feel pressured to be a certain weight. In one survey, more than 30 percent of women and 20 percent of men agreed that they would consider cosmetic surgery in the future. Too fat, too tall or even too thin? Only 5% of the population actually achieves the “ideal body” goal, so why are people still striving to achieve it? Why don't they just accept who they are? Body image is very often linked to low self-esteem. Since 1990, the age of a girl on a diet has dropped from twelve to eight. To me it's shocking, if an eight year old knows what. a diet is it? 80% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat as are 9/10 of girls who are on a diet in high school while only 1/10 of high school girls are overweight. Young children who watch television are more likely to report appearance concerns because of a celebrity they have seen. So what is the main reason people have body image issues? The main reason people can give is the media. From a young age we are all bombarded with images of models and celebrities plastered across magazines, newspapers and television, with most of the stories covered being about their weight. Did you know that 70% of women feel angrier and more depressed after viewing images of models? In most magazines these days there is a page of 3 or more celebrities with a before and after photo of them gaining or losing weight. Even if the celebrity has gained weight 9 times out of 10, they will still be at a decent weight, but in the eyes of the media, it is claimed that they have...... middle of paper ...... if advertising is based on a shampoo in which the actress will always be slim. Body image is a major issue that many people face; about 91% of women are unhappy with their body and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal figure. In my opinion I don't think body image will ever stop being a problem, not everyone will be able to accept their appearance, they can accept that they can't change their appearance but that doesn't mean say they won't stop trying, I believe men and women try to achieve this ideal body because they see so many models with this perfect figure when in reality the model doesn't even look like not what the picture depicts it as, it's like it's brainwashing us to think we should look like that when the only person we should look like is ourselves. I believe everyone should try and learn to love the skin they are in.
