The African Children's Project and orphans in AfricaThere are an estimated more than 20 million children under the age of 15 who have lost one or both parents to of HIV/AIDS in Africa (UNICEF, 10). These children are usually taken to orphanages placed in certain regions of Africa. Many orphanages are run by Christian organizations and have the underlying message of Christ in their homes. Orphanages and children's homes, like the African Children's Project, address the three main needs of orphaned children: physical, emotional and spiritual, which are made possible through financial assistance and donations. The African Children's Project orphanages are now located in Kenya and are run by families who felt led to settle there and make a difference. Orphanages take in children because they have lost one or both parents, most likely to HIV/AIDS. Orphans who have lost both parents are called “double orphans” (UNICEF, 11).
