Essay / Dreaming and what does it all mean? By Thomas Nagel
It looked like we thought a snake was a shadow on the grass. This intrigued me, because I feel like it kills my argument that the outside world is real. Our mind decides things if you let it. For example, if you look long and hard enough at a wooden door you may start to see shapes and faces or when you fall asleep you see a shadow and you get scared, but it was just a hanger with a shirt. Perception is a very delicate thing. You see a man pointing a gun, at first you think he's the bad guy, but what you didn't know is that thirty minutes ago the man with a gun on his temple attacked a woman. Your mind makes things up, but according to our perception, seeing things that are inconclusive should not be a reason why we say there is no external element.
