  • Essay / INERRANCY AND THE GOSPELS: A GOD-CENTERED APPROACH TO...

IntroductionInerrancy and the Gospels, written by Vern Polythress, confronts the challenges of harmonizing the gospels. Polythress is professor of New Testament interpretation at Westminster Theological Seminary. He received his M.Div. and Th.M. in the apologetics of this seminar. He also holds an M.Litt in New Testament from the University of Cambridge, as well as a Th.D. in New Testament from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. The book is an apologia which argues that the gospels are infallible, in the face of differences found in the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Polythress states that its goal is to "treat [the Gospels] in harmony with the conviction that the Bible is the word of God" (13). Summary The book is written in seven parts discussing the challenges, principles and attitudes of the harmonization and how they apply. to a variety of specific cases. Polythress lays the foundation for an uncompromising belief in inerrancy and a recognition of the finitude of the human condition as it attempts to harmonize. His first case study is a fascinating look at Matthew and Luke's different accounts of the role of intermediaries in the healing of the centurion's servant. After dismissing as improbable the possibility of two events, Polythress examines how the different emphases of the two gospel authors manifested themselves in the different details of the narrative: “In summary, Matthew and Luke have distinct emphases; Matthew emphasizes the centurion's Gentile status, and Luke emphasizes his humility. These two emphases say something important about the kingdom of God and the ministry of Jesus” (24). Polythress uses this case as a starting point to outline the principles of attunement...... middle of article...... this is more a reflection of the novice's attempt to understand than poor communication from the author. . If there is another weakness, it is that the book is not comprehensive. One would like a reference version of all Gospel attunement issues covered in the same style as is available in the Polythress examples. anyone who believes in the inerrancy of Scripture but has struggled with differences in the gospel accounts. This reader would go so far as to say that it is a must-have on the desk of any preacher or teacher of the Word of God. Those who wish to be faithful to the message of Scripture and the infallible Word of God will be encouraged, equipped and inspired by this work..
