Darcy and Elizabeth are the most important characters in the story, but they are not the only characters who impact the meaning of the book. Mr. Bennet, for example, is a very important character not only because he is one of the few people whose opinion Elisabeth values and respects, but he also adds some humor to the story. His ability to subtly say something sensible and yet humorous makes him a very interesting character. The story can start to get tedious and overwhelming, but Mr. Bennet always helps add comic relief to the situations. His concise but funny comments help add meaning to the story. However, it is not always pleasant; he is sometimes very serious and he is the only one who really defends Elisabeth when she does not want to marry Mr. Collins. He tells her that "I'll never see you again if you marry Mr. Collins." By saying this, he ends the discussion and prevents Elisabeth from living a miserable life with Mr. Collins. He is probably the only person who has a strong influence on Elisabeth and one of the only people whom Elisabeth truly trusts. This is the first person Elisabeth tells that she loves Mr. Darcy.
