Essay / Saving Mr. Banks Analysis - 673
Saving Mr. Banks is a biographical comedy-drama about how Mary Poppins was brought to life on screen, exactly 50 years after the release of the Mary Poppins film. Starring Tom Hanks, who takes on the role of Walt Disney and is the best man for the job. Even though Tom Hanks was very good, it's the amazing Emma Thompson who holds your attention the most. She plays the reserved Pamela “PL” Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. A film directed by John Lee Hancock who also directed The Blind Side. The film begins in London in 1961 in the house of Mrs. Travers. The beginning can be quite difficult to understand if you don't know what the film is about. She's on the phone talking about a "he" and a "she." Once you know who she's talking to, it's easier to understand. The “he” is Walt Disney and the “she” is Mary Poppins. Walt Disney wants to make a Mary Poppins movie. The only thing Ms. Travers doesn't want is to see her book turn into a "silly cartoon," as she calls it. She has had the offer for a good twenty years now. Due to financial problems, her agent tries to persuade her to accept the offer. All the while, Mrs. Travers comes across as a very cold person and someone who doesn't have many friends or family. After promising Mrs. Travers that they would only work with real actors and no cartoons, Walt Disney gets it. come to Hollywood to consider signing over the film rights after all. Ms. Travers dreads going to Hollywood and has no intention of giving up the rights to her Mary Poppins book series. She is very protective of the character. This is when the flashbacks of his childhood begin. The spillover from scenes from 1961 to those from 1906 is very good. Ms. Tra...... middle of paper...... the film was very engaging, informative and very enjoyable to watch. This could have been a very boring film but it wasn't. Especially when you've already seen Mary Poppins. The film was very well written. At first it might have seemed like it would get boring very easily but after a while you get sucked into the story. The more we learn about the character, the more interesting he becomes. This is definitely a film worth watching. Watching a movie without Dutch subtitles was not something I had ever done before. I regularly download films or series and watch them without Dutch subtitles. With some films it's more difficult than with others. It wasn't such a difficult movie to understand. There were no thick accents or really difficult words. I thought it was a fun assignment to do but I found 2 pages of text a little too long for review.
