Since the launch of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, Americans have been put back in charge of their individual health care. Under this new law, a health insurance marketplace provides a safe haven for people without insurance to obtain coverage. Again this year, citizens found out early whether they qualified for Medicare or CHIP, officially known as the Children's Health Insurance Program. There is so much to learn about the Affordable Care Act and this document outlines the roles of the different branches of government, as well as other important factors associated with this law. Obama Care, as most would call it, was passed by the United States Senate, approved by the House of Representatives, and signed into law by the President of the United States (Health Care and Government, 2013). The lives of many people were transformed by this initiative, as all three branches played a role in passing the law. During the early years of 2009 to 2010, the political process pushed healthcare through legislation led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Healthcare and Government, 2013). This process was extraordinarily tiring, as many advocates for the bills' passage were present. Many members of Congress “hung out” and wanted to slow the process even further due to the confusion surrounding the bill (Health Care and Government, 2013). Despite opposition from many sides of the American people, a Democratic-dominated House of Representatives passed the bill and the Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 21, 2010 (Hogberg, 2013).
