Bulimia and anorexia are a growing epidemic in America. Bulimia and anorexia can appear at any age, but are most common between the ages of 11 and 17. Of all the people who suffer from this disease, only 50% of them are cured, and another 6% who suffer from this horrible disease will die. This disease has become very deadly for our young adults. Bulimia and anorexia can cause a distorted image in a person's mind because they honestly believe they are overweight. In their minds, they are undoubtedly obese. Even if the person only weighs 95 pounds. This condition causes the person to think that they are overweight. This could cause a serious bout of depression. Once the person reaches the stage of depression, professional help is necessary because the feeling of being overweight and depressed could put them over the edge. People suffering from bulimia engage in what are called binge eating disorders. Binge eating occurs when people eat larger quantities of food in less than two hours. (Internet3) Then, after eating, they feel guilt or shame and therefore have to undo their behavior. To reverse their behavior, they make themselves vomit, take laxatives, water pills, or starve themselves. (Cauwel21) Binges and pores usually occur more than twice a week for at least three months. (Internet1)What are the causes of bulimia and anorexia? It can be caused by stress or depression, but more often it is diet that is the cause. (Erichsen 12) Stressful situations such as death can cause bulimia and anorexia. Additionally, many young adults frequently experience bouts of depression for various circumstances during their adolescence. But, again, bulimia and anorexia are most often triggered by dieting. (Moe 21) Many psychological factors play an important role in causing bulimia and anorexia. People who are afraid of growing up sometimes have problems with anorexia because they think that if they stop eating, they want to get old or fat. (Erichsen15)Ford5People need to take control of themselves if they have anorexia or bulimia because they can control what they eat or if they want to eat. (Internet1) If a person feels out of control due to difficulties at home, they need to control what they eat. they are eating or if they are going to eat. People with anorexia take extra calcium and multivitamin pills to help cope with the significant losses to the body.
