    The United States has had forty-four elections, all the presidents have been chosen by the majority system, and they have effectively figured out how to run the state. However, people are still thinking about how to improve the electoral system to be more responsive to our economy and how a different style of voting could benefit the United States. This highlights new systems for electing our leaders, but the result can be harsh. Ever since the most important voting system of all, voting for president, changed, all other voting systems are under debate as to whether or not to adopt the new system. Voting on anything from simply choosing a place to eat to electing the president of a company can be made more complicated because there are two voting systems. There would be many more conflicts, but it would not be practical to develop a new electoral system. The majority system should therefore not be replaced by a new system. According to Pippa Norris, two of the most common types of voting systems are the "majoritarian system" and the "proportional representation system". In the majority system, the candidate must obtain a plurality of votes to win. Each citizen has a number of votes which corresponds to the number of chairs. For example, a constituency may have five representatives, so citizens will choose five candidates on the ballot. The winning candidate does not need to score more than fifty percent, they just need to score more than their competitors. The proportional representation system is the main rival to the majority system and is currently used in many European countries such as Germany, Italy and Denmark.
