Essay / Ovid's Metamorphoses - 672
The painting by Peter Paul Rubens depicts a situation involving the survival of the fittest. In this Meleager battle, a human struggles to defeat the sturdy Calydonian boar. He displays the contrast between the two resilient forces through his use of light and dark shades, alternating them throughout the painting. To represent a battle between good and evil, Rubens gave the boar's territory a dark and gloomy essence. So, to contrast the mischievous animal, on the right where Meleager and Atlanta are, the artist generates a luminous glow in the background, indicating power. Rubens lightly radiates the sky, as he paints the battle at sunrise, when the sun slowly rises to its peak, revealing the dawn. The clouds change from a murky, ominous color to a light cream color, indicating hope for the survival of Meleager and Atlanta. The new morning is a symbol of victory from Meleager's point of view, even though he and Atlanta are both depicted carrying a bow, arrows, and spears to kill the boar. This shows that a single powerful force to destroy the wild boar might not be enough. In addition to this, the boar's hoof is placed on the chest of the injured man, thus establishing his dominance and warning others to stay away, otherwise they would suffer the same fate. Subsequently, there is a repetition of elements in the painting, as the tree is illustrated twice and there are many dogs and horses. Rubens created a perspective of trees/shrubs towards the horizon to give the painting an overall earthy feel. Two men dressed in orange are shown blowing horns, perhaps intended to calm the boar. The women at the bottom left are not concerned about the situation, even though they carry spears in their hands. "Atlanta and Meleager in pursuit of Cal...... middle of paper ...... when Meleager was Growing up, his uncles always made fun of him, because he was the child of the enemy (even if he was also their sister's child). It is they who persuade Meleager to go on a journey to kill the boar, thus expressing the domestic tension Meleager was facing. The painting does not reflect the extent to which Meleager's family is his enemy; rather, it suggests that an assembly is attempting to fight the boar together. The central point of this painting is obviously the wild boar, which shows its strength when it conquers another human being. This painting represents the main event on which the entire story is based, as killing the boar has serious consequences for Meleager and ultimately leads to his death. Both unity and variety are represented in this work of art: people dressed in bright colors are united to kill the wild boar, but they have different methods to deal with the situation..
