    Eating DisordersPeople are constantly affected by social media and their peers, leading them to develop an ideal body image. They will strive to achieve this body despite the devastating consequences of developing an eating disorder. The social, mental, and physical effects of an eating disorder can linger in the person for the rest of their life, providing a never-ending obstacle. An eating disorder is “an illness that causes serious disruptions in your daily diet, such as overeating.” small amounts of food or severe overeating” (“Eating Disorders”). The main types of eating disorders are: anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (described as eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) DSM-IV). Many people experience eating disorders, and these disorders are much more common than we think. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some point in their lives (“Types & Symptoms of Eating Disorders | National Eating Disorders Association”). Social factors that can cause eating disorders can include social media and ideal body image. People often want to look like the celebrities depicted on magazine covers, but one must always remember that the person on the cover of the magazine doesn't even look like the person depicted on the cover of the magazine. From a young age, people begin to be exposed to social media. “40-60% of primary school girls (ages 6-12) worry about their weight or becoming too fat.” (“Prevalence vs. Funding”) The ideals created by social media are perpetuated throughout life.
