  • Essay / College Ready Students - 1569

IntroductionSchools across the country are trying to find new ways to prepare their students for college. The entire country is now focusing on educational reforms. Many schools across the state do not provide the essential skills needed to prepare their students for college. Ubah Medical Academy is one such school. A self-proclaimed “culturally responsive” school, Ubah Medical Academy is located in Hopkins, Minnesota. It is a very small school with a population of three hundred and sixty students. These students are predominantly of East African origin. Ubah’s mission statement states that “Creating a learning culture and climate is a high priority at Ubah Medical Academy. Our school strives to engage students in academic learning to fully prepare them for college. They have failed to create an environment like the one they describe. Due to the lack of challenging programs and the administration's neglect of teaching social skills, Ubah fails to teach his students the skills they need to succeed in college. Literature Review The article “What Prepares a Student for College?” » by David Conley explores how schools can better prepare their students for postsecondary education. Through his research on the topic, Conley discovered four elements students should focus on to prepare their students for college: "content knowledge, knowledge of postsecondary education, cognitive strategies, and self-management skills ". Conley maintains that student success in college comes from schools taking extra steps to ensure their students' success. According to Conley, schools must create a collegial environment by teaching self-management skills while matching their courses with college reading standards...... middle of sheet ...... difficulty level that they should be. When students have to take difficult college courses, they will not know how to challenge themselves. They may have a difficult college experience. The administration is not doing everything it can to prepare its students. Not only would students suffer during their post-secondary studies, but it could also impact their professional lives. Ubah has the potential to produce thinkers capable of changing the world for the better; they simply must learn, as a school, how they can expand their students' knowledge and how to challenge them.Works CitedWork CitesConley, David T.
