Essay / A Comparison of Utopian Societies - 878
Since the creation of the world's first nation-state, the number one goal of its citizens has been to create the "perfect" society. For a majority of people in the novels Brave New World (c. 1932) by Aldous Huxley and The Giver (c. 1993) by Lois Lowry, a utopia and a "perfect" society had been achieved. But at first glance, the world created by Huxley and Lowry's community are actually totalitarian dystopias harboring many secrets. The similarities between the two novels are obvious and some readers might conclude that Lowry simply wrote a spin-off of Huxley's novel. Yes, the similarities between these two novels are phenomenal, but so are the differences. Both novels are set in a futuristic society, but the two communities are markedly different. The two novels feature characters with similar traits and personalities, but the way they were raised is contrasting. To some readers, Huxley's and Lowry's novels seem considerably similar, but more in-depth readers may recognize the uniqueness of both novels. Despite their similar subject matter, finding the similarities between the two novels requires a little more analysis than one might expect. Both novels feature an individual who wants to change his society for the better. Lowry's novel has Jonas, who uncovers secrets and discovers the superficiality of "the community" (Giver1) and Huxley's novel has John, who sees the true corruption of "The Other Place" (BNW110). These two men decided to change their environment for the better and end up sacrificing themselves. Jonah and John are also Jesus figures in their novels. Both Jonas and John try to improve their environment for themselves and others. Although it is debatable whether or not either will perform...... middle of paper ...... specific tasks during the "Ceremony of the Twelve" (Giver45) based on their interests, attitudes and beliefs. Aldous Huxley and Lois Lowry both wrote futuristic science fiction novels in their time. The novels were written sixty years apart, yet have many similarities between them. Brave New World and The Giver have similar characters and similarities in how emotions are controlled. However, these two novels also have many differences; from the way children are raised to the social structure of societies. Huxley and Lowry have created two masterful novels about the doom and gloom of the future. Both novels issue a warning to the world about the possibility of a totalitarian state that we may enter in the future. Both books are novels that can scare people with their perception of the future, but they are nonetheless both historical and insightful novels..
