  • Essay / Gender inequality: the gender gap between men and women

Despite the ability of women to now access a variety of professions and positions, men still dominate the power structure and make their rise much more difficult. Within organizations, men receive preferential treatment because they view women as an inferior sex. Men get promoted more easily than women, and women are expected to demonstrate exceptional behavior in order to receive any type of promotion for the same effort. Often, the presidency is seen as the final glass ceiling, and it is believed that it will likely be shattered by the election of the first female president. However, even though this glass ceiling is broken, the existence of glass ceilings remains visible in various organizations. For example, the glaring lack of women in Congress (a measly twenty) shows how difficult it is for women to be elected and keep their seats, even if they are as qualified as their male counterparts. Similarly, Professor Redding gave examples of women in positions such as lawyers and doctors. Although opportunities for entry into these occupations have expanded, there is still a gap within these occupations.
