Essay / Their Eyes Were Watching God - 1490
Throughout the film Their Eyes Were Watching God, Oprah Winfrey intersperses Zora Neale Hurston's story of a woman's journey to the point where no one even recognizes her. The change in theme, characters and their relationships constitutes a series of major differences between the book and the film. Instead of teaching people the important lessons one needs to know to succeed in this precious thing called life, Oprah tells a meaningless love story for the satisfaction of her viewers. His inaccurate interpretation of history caused a dramatic effect on the atmosphere and a completely new public attitude. During the film, Oprah changes Janie's character by strengthening her mental and physical state. She becomes much stronger physically because when the storm approached and flooded the town, she pulled herself and Tea Cake out of the water. However, in the book, Ms. Hurston has a completely opposite view to the film; Tea Cake kills a dog during the storm to save her and Janie's lives, then the cow pulls Janie out of the water and Tea Cake pulls herself out of the water. “Tea Cake cut through the water like an otter, opening his knife as he dove. The dog ran up the cow's spine until it attacked and Janie screamed and slid far back on the cow's tail, just out of reach of the dog's angry jaws...Tea Cake came out of the water at the cow's rump and grabbed the dog by the neck... Then Tea Cake finished him off and sent him to the bottom to stay there. The cow, relieved of a great weight, landed on the filling with Janie before Tea Cake intervened and crawled feebly onto the filling again” (Hurston 194). Zora's goal to make Janie physically weaker tells the story of a woman who cannot stand on her own; ...... middle of paper ....... 2013. “Their Eyes Were Watching God: Quotes on Race.” Shmoop.
